Liz Cox, from Cecil Wright & Partners brokerage, remembers witnessing a couple step on board their first ever yacht.

“I’m usually on the operational side of things, but recently I was lucky enough to be in Hyères to greet clients who had just bought a yacht from us and were coming on board for their first cruise. This was the first boat they had owned on their own and so there was a lot of excitement in the air.

These particular owners are members of a royal yachting club and are allowed to fly a special blue ensign when onboard; so as they approached, the chief officer rolled it out, which was a lovely personal touch. The deck crew were waiting for the owner and their guests on the swim platform, ready to welcome them onboard and offer them some champagne.

I was really there to represent my organization, to say congratulations and to give them a little gift – I didn’t expect the owner to burst into happy tears! It was so touching to witness their excitement and it was such a beautiful day for them to be setting out for their first sail ahead of a two-week cruise around the French Riviera. I think seeing it all first hand for once, and witnessing their smiles – like kids on Christmas Day – was just really special.

Having been involved with all the nitty gritty – finding the right captain and crew, sifting through the sales documentation and checking all legal compliance issues – I was beyond happy to hear that they had a great first season out on the water.”
